Privacy

What's Going Away is a website of guides. There are no accounts, no sign-ups and no forms, and we don't collect your name, address or email unless you choose to write to us. This page explains what information is involved when you visit, and who handles it.
Your checklist ticks
Each guide has a checklist you can tick on screen. Your ticks are saved in your own browser, on your own device, so they're still there next time. They're never sent to us or to anyone else. Clearing your browser's stored data removes them, and so does the "Clear my ticks" button under each checklist.
Fonts
The typefaces on this site come from Google Fonts, a free service from Google. To show them, your browser fetches them from Google's servers, on every page of this site, including this one. Like any website your browser contacts, those servers receive your device's internet address and basic details about your browser, such as its name and version. Your checklist ticks are never sent with them.
Hosting
This site is hosted by Amazon Web Services, on its AWS Amplify service. Each time your browser asks for a page, Amazon's servers receive your device's internet address, the address of the page, and basic details about your browser, because that's how a web page is delivered. Amazon says Amplify keeps access logs, records of the requests made to a site, until the site is deleted from Amplify. Your checklist ticks are never sent to Amazon either.
Advertising and cookies
This site is paid for by advertising, shown through Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technology to show ads, and may use information about your visits to this and other websites to choose which ads you see. Ads are not shown on this page, the About and Contact pages, or the "page not found" page.
You can control this. You can turn off personalized ads in Google's ad settings, and use the industry opt-out at YourAdChoices, or Your Online Choices in Europe. Google explains how it uses information from sites that show its ads, and how it uses cookies in advertising.
Visit counts
We don't run a visitor-tracking service on this site at the moment. If we start, this page will say which one, and what it records.
Email you send us
If you email us, we see your email address and what you wrote. We use it only to reply and to fix the site, and we don't add you to any mailing list. Please don't send passwords, account numbers or other private details.
Your rights
If you're in the European Union, the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the GDPR gives you rights over personal data held about you, including the right to see it, correct it and have it erased.
If you live in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) gives you rights over personal information held by the businesses it covers, including the right to know what is collected and to opt out of its sale or sharing. The California Attorney General's page explains these rights and which businesses the law covers.
We never sell the email you send us or give it to anyone else. Advertising works differently. As described above, Google and its partners use cookies to collect information about your visits, and may use it to choose ads for you. California's law calls it "sharing" when information about you is passed to another company for ads chosen from your activity across websites. You can turn off personalized ads in Google's ad settings, and use the opt-out at YourAdChoices, both linked above.
Because there are no accounts here, we hold no personal records beyond any email you send us. Requests about data held by our advertising provider can go to Google, or to us and we'll point you to the right place.
Children
This site is written for adults and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from children.
Links to other websites
Our guides link to the sources they rely on, such as company help pages and government notices. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and this one doesn't cover them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it.
